India-Japan discuss climate change, green hydrogen at high level policy talks on environment

India and Japan may explore strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas such as resource efficiency, low carbon technology and green hydrogen, Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav said at the first high-level policy dialogue on the environment between the two countries on Tuesday. During the talks held virtually, the issues of air pollution, sustainable technologies and transport, climate change and marine litter, fluorocarbons and COP 26 were also discussed, the Union Environment Ministry said in a statement.

The meeting was held between Union Environment Minister Yadav and Japan’s Environment Minister Koizumi Shinjiro. India recognized the importance of India-Japan bilateral cooperation on the environment and appreciated the efforts made by Japan in bringing new technologies to India, the ministry said.

During the meeting, the Minister highlighted the achievements made by India in tackling climate change under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Yadav said India and Japan may particularly explore strengthening bilateral cooperation between circular economy and resource efficiency, low carbon technology, green hydrogen, among others, according to the ministry.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri @NarendraModi ji, India is not only on track to achieve but also exceeding its Paris Agreement goals. The minister tweeted, India greatly appreciates Japan’s efforts in bringing new technology to tackle global environmental challenges. Noting Japan’s expertise and technology on low carbon technology, the Environment Minister also urged Japan to consider joining the Leadership Group for Industry Transition, a global initiative led by India and Sweden.

The Environment Minister of Japan noted that the two countries can strengthen bilateral cooperation through the Joint Credit Mechanism (JCM), the Alliance for Disaster Resilience Infrastructure (CDRI) and support in the areas supported by the G20, especially climate, environment and Cooperation on energy can be traced. , according to the statement. Both sides agreed to further strengthen bilateral cooperation on environment and to take forward discussions on JCM.
