Host of events organized to commemorate 70th year of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Japan

Japan’s Consul General Taga Masayuki said in Chennai on Monday that the ties between Japan and India are at the strongest point in history as India is Japan’s special strategic and global partner.

“This is the 70th year of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. The relationship has become much wider. Government-to-government relations are very strong and economic ties are growing,” Mr Masayuki said.

He further said that people-to-people exchanges between the two countries need to be further promoted and Japan will gradually open up to tourists because of the precautions over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Consul General said there are 5,000 Japanese business establishments in India, of which about 600 are in Tamil Nadu, mainly in the manufacturing sector. He said that a large number of Japanese companies in the IT sector are mainly based in Bengaluru, which the Tamil Nadu government is keen to bring to the state.

To mark the 70th year of diplomatic relations, the Consulate General of Japan, the Indo-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IJCCI) and ABK-AOTS Dosakai are organizing several events in Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram till December this year.

A reception to celebrate the occasion was held on 28 April, while a two-day symposium on India-Japan relations will be organized by the IJCCI on 7 and 8 May. The symposium will focus on ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific in India and Japan’. ’, said Suguna Ramamurthy, General Secretary, IJCCI.

ABK-AOTS Dosakai President G. Chandramohan said the center will conduct a Japanese language proficiency test in July and a Mosai Japanese speech competition in December.

The Japanese Night, Japan Chennai Expo will be organized in association with the Japanese language school, said R Anuradha, director of the school.
