India receives ₹1.5 lakh crore offers for semiconductor, display fabs

New Delhi: The Central Government’s Semicon India program set up to build the semiconductor and display ecosystem in the country has generated massive interest among companies. Rs 1.53 lakh crore was received in the first round that closed on February 15.

Five proposals have been received for the semiconductor and display fab, with a total investment of $20.5 billion, or . is close to 153,750 crore, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said in a statement on Saturday.

“Despite aggressive timelines for submission of applications in this greenfield segment of semiconductor and display manufacturing, the scheme has received a good response,” the ministry said.

Vedanta in a joint venture with Foxconn, IGSS Ventures Pte., Singapore and ISMC has submitted applications totaling $13.6 billion for the semiconductor fab. Applications have been received for setting up 28 nm-65 nm semiconductor fabs with a capacity of 120,000 wafers per month, seeking financial assistance of $5.6 billion from the central government.

Vedanta and another company, Elest, have submitted applications for the display fab with an estimated investment of $6.7 billion, the ministry said. Financial assistance of $ 2.7 billion is being sought from the central government.

SPEL Semiconductor Limited, HCL, Sirma Technology and Valencani Electronics have registered for Semiconductor Packaging, while Rutonsha International Rectifier Limited has registered for Compound Semiconductors, Silicon Photonics, Sensor Fab and Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging for Compound Semiconductors under the scheme. Registered for. ATMP and OSAT facilities.

Separately, Terminus Circuits, Trispace Technologies and Curie Microelectronics have submitted applications under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, which has been successful in generating interest among domestic companies and startups. The ministry said the applicant companies have also submitted proposals for technology acquisition, partnership and collaboration with research institutions as part of the application.

Following the approval of the Union Cabinet, SCL Mohali has also been handed over to MeitY from the Department of Space and is being opened as a commercial fab for wider participation by Indian semiconductor design companies, the ministry said.

The size of the Indian semiconductor market was estimated at $15 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach $63 billion by 2026, as semiconductors are critical to manufacturing electronic components ranging from smartphones and cloud servers to modern cars, industrial automation, critical infrastructure and defense systems. are components.

As part of the plan to set up Display Fab in India, applications have been filed for setting up of 6th Generation Display FAB for manufacturing of state-of-the-art AMOLED display panels along with Gen 8.6 TFT LCD Display Fab which are used in advanced Huh. Smartphones. India’s display panel market is estimated to be worth $7 billion and is expected to grow to $15 billion by 2025.

“Acknowledgment has been issued by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to the applicant companies under the Semiconductor and Display Fab schemes, which have been set up as an independent institution to lead the Semicon India programme,” the ministry said.

The ISM will coordinate with the applicant companies that have reached out to the states to provide access to world class infrastructure, the ministry said in the statement, with state governments for setting up high-tech clusters with Mission 300 – 500 will work together. Availability of one acre of developed land, 100 KVA power, 50 MLD water, Natural Gas and Common Facility Center for Testing and Certification.

“India is one of the favorable destinations for semiconductor design with over 50,000 design professionals and many design service companies. Over 2000 ICs and chips have been designed in India over the years.”

encouraging participation by companies in The Rs 76,000 crore plan is likely to develop a strong and sustainable semiconductor and display ecosystem in the country. This is expected to boost the Indian economy and generate significant employment as well as skilled manpower, the ministry said.
