India sees 12.7k new covid cases

Even as Covid cases rose to around 12,781 in the last 24 hours, health experts said India has achieved remarkable immunization coverage by delivering over 1.96 billion doses across all eligible age groups.

“India’s total vaccination coverage is far higher than other countries. It has provided a massive amount of protection to keep the deaths from Alpha, Delta and Omicron (variants of Covid-19) down. So as far as the COVID-19 virus is concerned, the vaccination campaign has saved us all,” said Dr Sanjeev Bagai, President, Nephron Clinic.

With the number of active cases rising to 76,700 on Monday, the total number of COVID cases has reached 43.3 million. The Health Ministry said that the death toll has risen to 524,873 with 18 new deaths. Unofficial death estimates are many times higher.

While Delhi has an active caseload of 5,542, Maharashtra has 23,746, Haryana has 2,985, Kerala has 22,436, Tamil Nadu has 3,522 and Karnataka has 5,035.

Rising COVID numbers are pushing the positivity rate in an upward direction as the country’s daily positivity rate has reached 4.32% while the weekly positivity rate is 2.62%.

In the last 24 hours, more than 8,537 patients have been cured of corona. More than 42.7 million people have recovered from COVID since the start of the pandemic.

The country has so far conducted over 850 million Covid tests, including 296,050 tests in the last 24 hours.

The Central Government has provided over 1.93 billion vaccine doses to the States/UTs, while 127 million unused doses are available with the States and UTs.

In view of rising COVID cases across the country, the Union Health Ministry has directed all States/UTs to continue regular surveillance of Influenza Like Illnesses (lLl) and SARI cases in all hospitals along with continuous genome sequencing. States have also been asked to continue immunization of all eligible people.
