  • The right-arm pacer is currently not with the team in Mohali
  • Shami likely to be out of Australia series

India pacer Mohammed Shami tested positive for Covid on Saturday, days before the start of the India vs Australia T20I series in Mohali.

Shami was included in the T20I squad after a long absence from the setup. The right-arm pacer’s last participation in the national team’s colors was in last year’s T20 World Cup, where his performance was scrutinised.

Shami had an incredible performance for Gujarat Titans in the IPL as the Ahmedabad-based outfit lifted the trophy in their first campaign. Since then, several former players have been struggling to find the 32-year-old in the T20I setup for India.

The right-arm pacer was dropped from the Asia Cup squad, which did not sit well with many fans and critics. Shami was eventually called up to the T20 World Cup squad as a standby player and was included in the squad for the upcoming series against Australia which was to begin on 20 September.

However, news broke on Saturday that the 32-year-old had tested positive for COVID and is currently not in Mohali with the team.

The BCCI medical team is ready to take a call on his participation in the series against Australia. But it is likely that he will be ruled out of the three matches against the Aussies.
