Joe Root England has joined a select group of players after scoring 737 runs in England’s drawn Test series against India. The former England captain ended the campaign with an unbeaten 142 with a Yorkshire teammate Jonny Bairstow (114 not out), he guided England to chase down their highest fourth-innings target of 378-3 during a seven-wicket win in the Covid-delayed fifth Test at Edgbaston on Tuesday. Walter Hammond’s 905 runs for Australia in the 1928/29 Ashes is the most by any batsman from England.

But Graham Gooch’s 752 against India in 1990 was achieved in just three Tests, scoring 456 runs at Lord’s alone, thanks to his innings of 333 and 123 in the ‘Home of Cricket’.
