According to sources, there was a long discussion about the stand-in captain after Kohli sought rest in the first Test. It was proposed to give the captaincy to Rohit in the first Test and then rest him for the second match in Mumbai.
However, after a thorough analysis of Rohit’s workload, it was decided that the new full-time T20I captain should be given a longer break.
While Rahane’s form has been under question for some time now, TOI understands that the selectors were wary of making wholesale changes and ensured there was an experienced leader in the absence of Kohli and Rohit.
Shubman Gill and Mayank Agarwal are the two opening options to partner with in-form KL Rahul, while Wriddhiman Saha will be the first-choice wicketkeeper.
The middle order will be led by Rahane and Hanuma Vihari, who last played a Test in Sydney in January.
