Football fans can heave a sigh of relief as Indian football will return to normalcy with a nine-month calendar from next season. Scheduling will include two cup events and a longer Indian Super League.
According to a report in the Times of India, the organizers of the Indian Super League (ISL) have informed the club’s CEO that football from the next season to accommodate the Durand Cup (pre-season) and Super Cup (post-season). The calendar will be expanded. Additionally, the ISL will facilitate more weekend-focused matches to increase viewership and attendance.

The previous edition of ISL began on 19 November and ended on 20 March. Indian footballers were left with an unusually long off-season as the I-League was wrapped up too quickly.
“ISL will consist of 11 teams and 20 league games. Apart from this, there will be at least four matches in the Durand Cup and four other matches in the Super Cup,” TOI quoted an official as saying.
In a presentation to ISL club chief executives, the league said “the football calendar is being moved from a smaller event to a more generalized calendar in order to bring it in line with football leagues throughout the world”.
It is worth noting that the Durand Cup and Super Cup competitions have been given the green signal by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The AFC has determined that both competitions conform to their entry manual guidelines, which make it mandatory for clubs to play at least 27 matches in eight months.
The season is expected to begin on August 13 with the Durand Cup. The Durand Cup will feature 20 teams – 11 from the ISL, five from the I-League and four from the Indian Armed Forces. The teams will be divided into four groups. After the conclusion of the Durand Cup on 24 September, the teams will begin preparations for the ISL, which is expected to be played from 6 October to 18 March.
The Super Cup has been scheduled as a post-season tournament and will be played between April 1 and May 14. The I-League’s schedule has not been announced yet, but it is expected to run from October to March.
