Singapore:

According to a media report, a 48-year-old Indian-origin man was jailed in Singapore for throwing obscenities and racially charged abuses at a Chinese-origin taxi driver.

The Straits Times reported that Sahyanathan Anthony admitted to being drunk in a public place and harassing 66-year-old Tan Tek Hok.

He was sentenced on Thursday to two weeks and three days in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of harassment.

Sahyanathan and his wife had boarded a taxi on Toh Guan Road near Jurong East Central on October 30 last year.

Sahyanathan instructed the cab driver to take them to the Plaza Singapore Shopping Mall on Orchard Road.

As they were on their way towards the mall, Sahyanathan got agitated. He realized that the driver had come a long way to his destination.

After that he started abusing the driver.

State Prosecuting Officer (SPO) M Mariyappan said when the taxi reached the mall, Sahyanathan did not pay the fare of Singapore $17.80.

The SPO said, “The accused informed the complainant that he was running inside the mall to buy a handphone and would later return to pay the taxi driver… The accused and his wife got down from the taxi.”

The complainant did not agree to the arrangement, as he was concerned that the accused may not return to settle his taxi fare.
