Indian-origin scientist wins prestigious award in Australia – Times of India

Veena SahajwalaIndian-origin scientist and professor University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australiahas been recognized for his work in communicating the science of sustainability to a wider community audience, according to a press release by UNSW, He has won the prestigious Celestino Eureka Prize for the promotion of science understanding for 2022. The Australian Museum Eureka Awards are Australia’s most high-profile science awards.
Sahajwala, Scientia Professor, UNSW Science, is the leading inventor of a new generation of ‘green’ materials and sustainable products. The UNSW release said, “Through her rigorous research and broader community and industry engagement, she is changing the mindset in Australia to see unwanted material not as a waste, but as a valuable resource. ”
“It is an incredible honor to be awarded the 2022 Eureka Prize for promoting the understanding of science. It is such a privilege to be able to share with the wider community the important role science plays in our daily lives. Without science We will not be able to enjoy most of the things that we take lightly now,” said Sahajwala.
“Science has become more mainstream than ever, and its role in finding solutions to things like COVID-19 and our pressing, sustainability and climate challenges has generated a widespread thirst for knowledge and optimism. Me and the team at the UNSW Sustainable Materials Research and Technology Center (SMART@UNSW) are dedicated to collaborating with the community and industry to address the challenges we face to help deliver better social, environmental and economic outcomes.
