The new playing conditions issued by the BCCI state that captains of IPL teams can name their playing XI after the toss and not hand over the team sheet before the spin of the coin. According to clause 1.2.1 of the playing conditions: “Each captain shall nominate 11 players and a maximum of 5 substitute fielders in writing to the IPL Match Referee after the toss.” “No player (a member of the playing XI) may be changed after he has been nominated and before the start of play without the consent of the opposing captain except as set out in clause 1.2.9.”

This effectively means that after the toss, if a captain feels that he needs to make changes to his eleven as per the demand of the situation, he is free to do so till the start of the match.

The other significant change in playing conditions is the penalty for foul play by the wicket-keeper if the batsman changes position before meeting the ball.

In the event of improper movement by the wicket-keeper, either umpire shall call and signal dead ball and inform the other umpire of the reasons for doing so. The bowler’s last umpire will then: “Award a penalty of one run for a wide or no ball, if applicable or award 5 penalty runs to the batting team. Inform the captain of the fielding side of the reason for this action. Batsmen Inform and, as soon as possible, what has happened to the captain of the batting side.”

“Impact Substitutions” where one new player out of five designated substitutions can be introduced during the match were announced in advance by the tournament committee.
