Indian railway stations to be made handicapped friendly

Indian Railways will soon have 30 disabled-friendly stations across the country. The initiative aims to help visually impaired persons, those in wheelchairs, and those with hearing impairments to travel independently by reducing their dependence on fellow passengers.

Platforms and rails will have leading Braille signs to indicate numbers and facilities, reflective strips on stairs for persons with limited vision, Braille general signage for facilities like male-female restrooms and Braille maps of railway stations.

Along with this, QR code system will also be provided to watch the sign language film about the station. Braille information booklets will be available at the inquiry counters, along with a portable ramp and wheelchair to board the disabled coach.

This initiative has been taken by Standard Chartered Bank in partnership with Anuprayas and Samarthanam Trust. The action is part of the Bank’s “Seeing is Believing” project, which aims to combat vision loss and preventable blindness.

Karuna Bhatia, Head of Sustainability in India, Standard Chartered, was optimistic about the collaboration. “While there is still a long way to go, this effort as part of our Seeing is Believing campaign reaffirms our commitment to breaking down barriers to accessibility and accessibility for persons with disabilities,” he said while commenting on the initiative.

Although Thane railway station will be the first to open in Maharashtra, all these facilities will be available at 30 railway stations in the country by 1st April 2022. Bandra, Agra, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Egmore Chennai, Bhopal, Mathura and Secunderabad are among the stations to be serviced by this development.
