Indian Railways goes International; Delivery of 75 utility vehicles from Chennai to Bhutan for the first time

Indian Railways had delivered its first consignment of goods to Bhutan through a multi-modal route. A goods train brought 75 utility vehicles that Bhutan had bought from Chennai to Hasimara railway station in West Bengal. According to him, vehicles were taken by road in the neighboring Himalayan country on Saturday morning after the goods train arrived at Alipurduar railway station in North West Bengal’s Alipurduar district late Friday night.

Dilip Kumar Singh, Alipurduar Divisional Railway Manager, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said that this is a first of its kind initiative and in future more goods will be delivered based on the demand of Bhutan.

“We are developing infrastructure at Hasimara railway station, which is strategically located to do business with Bhutan. We are building a siding, and there are plans to build a warehouse in collaboration with the Central Warehousing Corporation. We want to handle all kinds of items and that was just the beginning,” he said.
