India’s 1 billion Covid-19 vaccine doses: Some disparities cleared, some left out

Half of all Indians live in five states: Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. But out of the total dose given in India so far, only 41.5% has gone to these states. In terms of dosage per 1,000 population, Uttar Pradesh (508) and Bihar (505) lag behind the national average (729).

Gender inequality that existed at an early stage has been addressed, with 99 women getting jobs for every 100 men in the past month, up from only 79 per 100 in June. However, some states with high immunization coverage are performing poorly: Delhi, for example, administered doses to 723 females per 1,000 males, a gross mismatch against a sex ratio of 876:1,000.

With the age group 45+ receiving 1,270 doses per 1,000 population, about 73% have not yet received full vaccination. The youth group—age group 18-44—makes up to 74 percent of India’s population and has received 55.5% of the total dose. Since August, 60% of all supplements have gone to this age group.

As vaccination expands, these disparities are likely to reduce. However, the pace of vaccination has slowed this month to 5.3 million doses per day, compared to 7.9 million and 6.1 million in the last two months. As more vaccines enter the market, the rollout will get a push.

big drop

In the past seven days, India’s vaccination coverage grew by just 2.2%, the third slowest among the 10 most populous countries for which data is available. Indonesia saw the fastest growth for the second week in a row, followed by the Philippines and Mexico.

Indonesia, which recently saw a devastating Covid-19 outbreak, aims to deliver 300 million doses by the end of this year, even as its famed tourist destination Bali reopens to vaccinated tourists. is preparing for. The Philippines received 844,800 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from Germany through the COVAX facility earlier this week. It also began vaccinating its teenage population with comorbidities.

Russia this week recorded its highest daily Covid-19 death toll since the pandemic began early last year. It has so far given only 670 doses per 1,000 people. Of Russia’s 146 million citizens, only 42 million have been fully vaccinated.

first in 8 months

Its outbreak in India is continuously decreasing. India recorded 106,770 new cases, a decline of 16.2% in the last seven days. Kerala, with 59,092 new infections, recorded more cases than all other states and union territories. Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur districts account for 40.6% of all cases reported in Kerala.

For the first time since late February, every single district in India reported less than 10,000 cases in a seven-day period. The number of new cases increased in only 100 districts this week, but in most cases the increase has been less than 20 cases.

The exceptions are Mizoram’s Serchhip and Himachal Pradesh’s Una, which reported 660 and 112 new cases, up from 426 and 85, respectively. In Tuensang in Nagaland and Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, the count has been increasing continuously for the last three weeks.

retrospective toll

India reported 1,377 new Covid-related deaths this week, down 13.2% from the previous week. There has been a steady decline for the last two weeks. All states and union territories reported fewer deaths this week except Haryana and Punjab, with 14 reporting none.

Haryana, which did not report any deaths last week, added 174 deaths this week, most of them retrospectively as part of the reconciliation exercise. 18 people have died in Punjab.

Kerala continued to report the highest number of deaths (513), but down 33%. Of the four districts in India that have reported more than 50 deaths, three are in Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram reported 97 deaths, the only district with more than 60 deaths in the last seven days.

India must continue to work to address inequalities in vaccination campaigns and ensure that the pandemic does not kill more people.
