India’s coal imports up 13% to 107 MT in April-September

However, the country’s coal imports declined to 14.85 MT in September from 19.04 MT in the same month of the previous fiscal.

India’s coal imports grew by 12.6% to 107.34 million tonnes in the first six months of 2021-22.

The country imported 95.30 million tonnes (MT) of coal in April-September 2020-21, according to provisional data compiled by mjunction services, based on monitoring of ship conditions and data received from shipping companies.

mjunction – a joint venture between Tata Steel and SAIL – is a B2B e-commerce company and also publishes research reports on the coal and steel vertical.

However, the country’s coal imports declined to 14.85 MT in September from 19.04 MT in the same month of the previous fiscal.

“Import of coal in September 2021 was also lower by 21.97% as compared to September 2020 when imports stood at 19.04 MT,” it said.

“The steep fall in import volume in September as compared to the corresponding month of last year was in line with the expectation given the steady rise in thermal and coking coal prices in the global market. This trend is likely to continue till there is significant correction and stability in sea prices,” said Vinay Verma, MD & CEO, mjunction.

Of the total imports in September, non-coking coal imports stood at 9.22 MT, as against 11.97 MT in September last year. Import of coking coal stood at 4.27 MT from 4.58 MT imported in September 2020.

India’s coal and coke imports through major and non-major ports during September 2021 are estimated to decline by 2.4% as compared to August 2021.
