India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage crosses 75 crore mark

India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage crossed the 75 crore mark on Monday. The Union Health Ministry said that more than 67 lakh vaccine doses were administered till 5:30 pm today, taking the total number to 75,10,41,391. The government said that more than 99% of healthcare workers and frontline workers in the country have been vaccinated with at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated the entire nation on the 75 crore milestone on Twitter. The World Health Organization (WHO) also reacted to the country’s achievement.

Regional Director Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh said, “WHO congratulates India for scaling up COVID-19 vaccination at an unprecedented pace. While it took 85 days to deliver the first 100 million doses, India jumped from 650 million to 750 million doses ” WHO South-East Asia said.

On September 1, India delivered the highest ever 1.33 crore (1,33,18,718) COVID-19 vaccine doses in a single day. More than 1 crore vaccine doses were given thrice in 11 days in the country.

The Union Health Ministry said that more than 72.70 crore vaccine doses have been provided to the States and Union Territories so far by the Government of India and through the Direct State Procurement category. In addition, over 8 lakh doses are in the pipeline. The ministry said that more than 4.90 crore remaining and unutilized COVID-19 vaccine doses are still available with the states and union territories.

In a separate statement, the ministry said that with 37,687 patients being cured in the last 24 hours (since the start of the pandemic), the cumulative number of cured patients has increased to 3,24,47,032. As a result, India’s recovery rate is stable. at 97.54 percent. More than 27,254 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours.

The nationwide immunization campaign with immunization of Health Workers (HCWs) and immunization of Frontline Workers (FLWs) was launched on January 16, 2021, starting from February 2, 2021. The second phase of Kovid-19 vaccination started from 1 March. 2021 for those who are above 60 years of age and 45 years and above for those with specified co-morbid conditions. The third phase was started from April 1, 2021, covering all persons above 45 years of age, irrespective of their type. In a significant development, the government later also announced to provide free COVID-19 vaccines to all adults from June 21.

The active caseload currently stands at 3,74,269. Active cases currently account for 1.13% of the total positive cases in the country. India has so far conducted more than 54.30 crore COVID-19 tests. The country’s COVID-19 daily positivity rate is reported to be 2.26%.
