India’s first saltwater LED lamp ‘Roshni’ launched

Union Minister Jitendra Singh has launched India’s first saltwater lantern named ‘Roshni’, which uses seawater to power LED lamps. According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, he unveiled the lantern during the visit of Sagar Anvesika, a coastal research vessel operated and used by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai for coastal research.

The minister said the saltwater lanterns will give a boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s UJALA scheme launched in 2015 for distribution of LED bulbs across the country.

“The schemes of the Ministry of Power such as Illumination Lamps with Solar Study Lamps will drive a vibrant renewable energy program aimed at energy security, energy access and reducing the carbon footprint of the national economy,” he said.

He further explained that this technique can also be used in hinterland where sea water is not available, as any salt water or normal water mixed with common salt can be used to power lanterns , which is not only cost-effective, but also economical. Very easy to operate.

Singh appreciated the NIOT team for inventing the Roshni lamp and advised them to transfer the technology to the industries for mass production of this multipurpose lamp, which can be of great help in rural and remote areas and in times of disasters. Is.

Later, the Union Minister along with Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, extended the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign and visited the laboratories to hoist the tricolor on the ship.

Singh also reviewed the progress of Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) technology developed by NIOT for converting sea water into potable water which has been successfully demonstrated in Lakshadweep Islands and informed that three desalination plants based on LTTD technology developed and demonstrated. Kavaratti, Agati and Minicoy Islands of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep.
