India’s peak power demand or highest single day supply touched an all-time high of 204.65 GW on Thursday amid the ongoing heatwave across vast areas of the country. “During the current month of April, 2022 (up to April 28, 14:50 hrs), the peak power demand increased by 12.1 per cent to 204.653 GW as against 182.559 GW in the same period last year,” said a source. On Tuesday, the all-India power demand or highest supply in a single day stood at a record level of 201.06 GW. The peak supply of electricity exceeded last year’s peak demand of 200.53 GW on July 7, 2021. However, the demand for electricity exceeded the supply as there was a shortfall of 8.22 GW on Tuesday, according to official data.

Similarly, the demand of 10.29 GW was not met on Wednesday as well, while the maximum supply was 200.65 GW on that day. The demand for electricity is expected to increase further in the coming days as the Meteorological Department has predicted that heat wave conditions will intensify across the country in the next five days. The IMD has issued an “orange” alert for parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, and has predicted a further two degrees Celsius in the northwest region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday that heat wave conditions would continue over Northwest and Central India during the next five days and over East India during the next three days. According to the statement of the ministry, the growth in energy demand in the month of March this year has been around 8.9 per cent. Further, it said the demand is expected to reach around 215-220 GW in the months of May-June, the ministry had said.
