New Delhi [India]May 23 (ANI): Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep S Puri on Tuesday said that India’s urban future will depend heavily on innovations developed in 100 smart cities.

Hardeep S Puri on Tuesday apprised the members of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs about the progress of the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) during a meeting on Monday evening.

According to a statement from the ministry, he further said that the implementation of the mission at the city level is handled by a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), which will play a key role in monitoring the projects to harness the full potential of this path-breaking mission. The Smart Cities Mission, launched on June 25, 2015, aims to provide basic infrastructure, a clean and sustainable environment and a good quality of life to its citizens through ‘smart solutions’. The Smart Cities Mission, monitored by an Apex Committee headed by Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, regularly reports the status of implementation of projects through real-time Geographical Management Information System (GMIS).

As per the SCM Statement and Guidelines, a Smart City Consultative Forum (SCAF) has been set up at the city level to advise and enable collaboration between various stakeholders. It includes Members of Parliament, Members of Legislative Assembly, Mayor, District Collector, local youth, technical experts, other stakeholders etc. All the 100 smart cities have set up their SCAFs. So far, smart cities have convened more than 756 SCAF meetings, according to the ministry’s statement.

In addition, at the State level, a High Powered Steering Committee (HPSC) has been set up under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary.

In addition, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs nominated directors on the board of the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to regularly monitor the progress in the respective cities, the ministry said.

In addition, the Ministry interacts regularly with States/Smart Cities at various levels through video conferences, review meetings, field visits, field workshops etc. to assess the performance of the cities and handle them for improvement.

Further, the committee visited various project sites including the ‘Mandovi Riverfront Promenade’, and the Integrated Command and Control Center in Goa and deliberated on the current status and progress as on May 1, 2023, highlighting that The Mission has about 7,800 projects worth Rs. 1.8 lakh crore, of which over 5,700 projects worth Rs 1.1 lakh crore (60 per cent by value) have been completed.

All the remaining projects are expected to be completed by June 30, 2024. Also, it was highlighted during the meeting that Rs 38,400 crore has been released under the Smart Cities Mission till May 1, 2023, out of which Rs 35,261 crore has been utilised.

The meeting was chaired by Hardeep Puri, MoHUA of Housing and Urban Affairs and Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
