Indonesia’s Semeru volcano erupts for the second time this month, warning issued

Indonesia’s Semeru volcano on the island of Java erupted early today.

Jakarta:

Indonesia’s Semeru volcano on the island of Java exploded a two-km (1.24-mile) high column of ash early Sunday, prompting officials to warn people to stay away from the eruption’s limits.

Earlier this month, an eruption, ash clouds and pyroclastic flows in Java’s highest mountain, Semeru, killed at least 46 people and left many missing, while thousands were displaced.

According to Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), Sunday’s morning eruption produced dense white and brown ash clouds.

The agency warned nearby residents not to do any activity within a five-km (three-mile) radius of the eruption center and to maintain a distance of 500 meters (1,500 ft) from the riverbank due to the risk of lava flows. .

PVMBG told people not to do any activity 13 km (eight miles) south-east of the blast centre.

With 142 volcanoes, Indonesia has the largest population globally living close to the volcano, including 8.6 million within 10 km (six miles).
