The Indian Navy’s fourth stealth Scorpene-class submarine INS Vela under Project 75 was commissioned on Thursday to boost the Navy’s combat capability. Project 75 involves the construction of six Scorpene-designed submarines.

Three of these submarines – Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj – have already been commissioned. The Indian Navy’s fourth stealth Scorpene-class submarine INS Vela was commissioned on 25 November 2021, the Navy said in a statement.

The submarine has been built by Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in collaboration with M/s Naval Group, France. The previous incarnation of INS Vela was commissioned on 31 August 1973 and served the nation for 37 years before decommissioning on 25 June 2010.

The new ‘Vella’ is a powerful Man o’ Warfare and is capable of offensive operations that span the entire spectrum of maritime warfare, the statement said. It added that the induction of the submarine significantly strengthens the Indian Navy’s position as a builder’s navy and adds agility and strength to its combat capability.

On Sunday, the Indian Navy’s stealth guided missile destroyer Visakhapatnam was commissioned in Mumbai. The indigenously built warship is loaded with an array of missiles and anti-submarine rockets. ,
