However, temples are much more than that. So let’s have a look at some fascinating facts about this heritage monument:

Interesting facts about Khajuraho Temples

Located in Madhya Pradesh, about 175 km south-east of Jhansi, the temples are today relatively isolated and were also located at a distance of 56 km from their capital Mahoba. However, this was due to the fact that undoubtedly contributed to their forgotten era when Ottoman invaders took over the kingdom in the 13th century. It was rediscovered in the 1830s by TS Burt, a British Army captain.

The temple’s structures are carved from a sandstone burial mound on the banks of the Ken River, and would require enormous levels of capital and labor to move.

Dedicated to two religions, Hinduism and Jainism, Khajuraho temples have only 10 percent of the carvings dedicated to erotic creative expressions. The remaining 90 percent, which most people are unaware of, represent the lives of the common people living during the golden age of the Chandela dynasty between the 10th and 11th centuries. There are sculptures of potters, musicians, farmers and women, but no one talks about those carvings.

Khajuraho was originally part of a larger complex of about 85 buildings, of which only a cluster of 20 structures have survived. Spread over an area of 23 square kilometres, these stunning monuments offer a glimpse into the history, antiquity, mystery and isolation in a remote region of today’s India.

The temples are named after ‘the one who bears the date palm’. Date is Hindi for date and it is said that once the city was surrounded by date palm trees and that is how it got its name.
