International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2021: Date, Theme, History and Significance

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a global observance observed every year on 3 December with the aim of promoting the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities in all walks of society. Out of the total population, about one billion people i.e. 7 billion or about 15 percent of the world’s population are living with some form of disability. 80 percent of the total disabled population lives in developing countries.

More than 100 million persons with disabilities are children. People with Disabilities (PWDs) have been “disproportionately” affected by the health, social and economic consequences of global issues. International Day of Persons with Disabilities: History

The annual observance of this day was announced in 1992 by United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3 with the aim of raising awareness of the issues faced by persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), adopted in 2006, after decades of work in the field of disability. CRDP advances the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. and other international development frameworks. Its main objective was to increase the participation of people with disabilities in the society, to end discrimination against them and to create equal opportunities for them.

People with disabilities suffer from poor health, lack of equal opportunities in education and sometimes even in work. This in turn affects their lifestyle as well as physical well-being. Hence, this day is celebrated to make the world aware of their issues and to make it a better place for them.
