International Friendship Day: A friend is someone you can always rely on and rely on. It is the purest form of human relationship which is bound by love and not by blood. International Day of Friendship is celebrated every year to appreciate the people close to us who have been with us through all the ups and downs.

International Friendship Day: History

Friendship Day was started by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards, who proposed celebrating it on August 2. However, Friendship Day quickly lost its popularity in the United States as people felt it was simply a ploy to sell greeting cards. But most of the Asian countries celebrate Friendship Day.

On 27 April 2011, the United Nations General Assembly formally established 30 July as the International Day of Friendship to promote and encourage peace, happiness and unity.

International Friendship Day: Date

Countries keep celebrating this day on different dates and months. While International Friendship Day is celebrated annually on 30 July, countries including India, Bangladesh and Malaysia observe special days on the first Sunday of August. In Oberlin, Ohio, it is celebrated every year on April 9.

International Friendship Day: Significance

The day celebrates the strong bond of friendship that unites two or more people regardless of their race, religion or ethnicity. To mark this special day, the United Nations encourages governments, international organizations and civil society groups to organize events, activities and initiatives to promote a dialogue between civilizations, solidarity and mutual understanding.

Sharing the human spirit through friendship is the theme of this year’s International Day of Friendship. Friendship is a basic weapon to ensure peace and prosperity among people. Apart from this, it also maintains the social harmony among the societies.
