literacy rate in india
According to the report published by National Survey of IndiaThe India’s Literacy Rate 77.7 percent in 2022. The literacy rate in 2011 was 73%.
With the new education policy aiming to achieve 100% literacy in the next decade, the country still has a long way to go before its population becomes truly literate.
In 1950, about 2 out of 10 Indians were literate. In 2022, the figures have almost reversed. From a literacy rate of just 18.3% in 1951 to 74.4% in 2018, India has come a long way in establishing a well-educated nation.

As per the data till 2018, India’s male literacy rate was 82.4% and female literacy rate was 65.8%. Although there has been a steady increase in both male and female literacy over the years, the wide gender gap remains today.
However, the recent increase in girls’ primary school enrollment is likely to bridge the gap between male and female literacy in the coming years. On the other hand, India is also home to the largest number of illiterate people in the world, with more than 25% of the population still illiterate.
