International Men’s Day: Divyendu Sharma posts a strong message against ‘macho’ image of men

Divyendu Sharma’s character of Mirzapur in Munna Bhaiya may preach toxic masculinity on the surface, but the actor is quite the opposite in real life. On International Men’s Day, the actor posted a video urging men to talk about their issues instead of portraying a tough, masculine image all the time.

On Instagram, Divyendu shared a video message with a sarcastic tone. The actor said, “We men, just don’t talk” while highlighting how men hide their weaknesses, as Munna Bhaiya ever encourages.

In the video, Divyendu says, “It’s not like anyone has stopped us to reveal what we are going through.. It’s a self-exercise choice, boss! Not to talk and the world.” To tell us that we too can be weak, because there is a man, isn’t it.” He used a sarcastic tone to prompt all the men to share what they were up to.

Divyendu shares how men hide their feelings because they don’t want to be lulled into a socially constructed idea of masculinity. “There is an image of men that keeps being promoted – that we are tough, masculine and rock solid. People feel that when a man opens up he is ‘weak’. This leads us to men, even though we never get help when we need it. Fighting all his battles alone. This #InternationalMensDay, we urge men to have an open and honest conversation about their feelings, their struggles and their experiences. Men, let’s talk,” his Instagram post read.

Divyendu has finally carved a niche for himself in the film industry thanks to his breakthrough role of a hot-headed gangster ‘Munna Tripathi’ in Mirzapur. Despite playing an utterly hideous character, Divyendu’s performance as the emotionally unstable Munna Bhaiya has been a favorite of the audience.

When asked if he was ever afraid that the audience might get inspired by his character, Divyendu told News18 last year, “I am definitely scared. Because the kind of messages I get from fans are often very impressed. I was recently shooting in Banaras, two 13 or 14 year old boys came up to me and said, ‘Thank you sir, you are very inspired by people in Mirzapur.’ So, I got a little scared and started thinking whether they were getting inspired by my character or me.”
