  • Ishaan returned to Mumbai Indians where he flourished at the top of the order

Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar on Saturday said it is unlikely that Ishan Kishan will feel the pressure of the price tag after he was sold to Mumbai Indians for Rs 15.25 crore in the mega auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ishaan Kishan becomes second most expensive The Indian player ever bought in the auction after Yuvraj Singh was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 16 crore in the IPL 2015 auction. Ishaan was also the costliest player to be sold on the first day of the IPL 2022 mega auction as he was ahead of CSK’s winning bid of Rs 14 crore for Deepak Chahar.

IPL 2022 Mega Auction: Live Updates

Mumbai Indians could not retain Ishan Kishan after Rohit Sharma (Rs 16 crore), Jasprit Bumrah (Rs 12 crore), Suryakumar Yadav (Rs 8 crore) and Kieron Pollard (Rs 6 crore). Despite leaving the wicketkeeper running in form, Mumbai Indians were keen to get the star player back as they on a rare occasion spent over Rs 10 crore for a player in the IPL auction.

Sanjay Manjrekar told Star Sports, “I don’t think the price tag will affect him much as the team has shown a lot of trust in him. I am sure this is something he would have told him.”

“When we talk of big price, there is a lot of pressure, when the team gambles on it the player feels the pressure. Someone like Nicholas Pooran (Rs 10.75 cr by Sunrisers Hyderabad) can feel the pressure.

“We saw how Yuvraj Singh, when he was sold again for Rs 14 crore, his own confidence fell. He was on the slide, Ishaan Kishan is at the peak of powers. He is on the same franchise, not me. Looks like the price is going to affect him. I don’t think Ishan Kishan will feel the pressure.”

Manjrekar said Mumbai Indians have shown a lot of faith in Ishan Kishan, who has scored 1452 runs in 61 matches at a strike rate of over 135.

“Obviously you can see that they have retained four players. Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Kieron Pollard. If they had retained 5, they would have retained Ishan Kishan. They have to retain him. Were desperate but they couldn’t. But they were like, ‘Whatever happens, we will buy it back from the market’.

“So now Ishaan Kishan is going to be part of a team where he feels he is really needed,” he added.
