IPL 2022, MI vs RR: Rohit Sharma set to join elite club of 10,000 runs with Virat Kohli

Mumbai Indians and India captain Rohit Sharma has become the seventh batsman to complete 10,000 runs in men’s T20 cricket. The 34-year-old is just 64 runs away from reaching the landmark as he prepares to lead MI in their second match of IPL 2022 against Rajasthan Royals at the DY Pati Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.

Rohit Sharma will become the second Indian batsman after Virat Kohli to reach the 10,000-run mark in the shortest format of the game. Rohit has scored 3313 runs in T20I cricket and holds the record for most runs in the shortest format at the international level. He has scored 5652 runs in IPL, sitting third in the list of all-time scorers in T20 tournaments.

Rohit looked in good touch in the IPL 2022 opener in Mumbai, scoring 41 runs in just 32 balls, hitting 2 sixes and 4 fours. However, MI lost their opener for the 10th year in a row, failing to defend a total of 177 against Delhi Capitals.

While Rohit looks to achieve the milestone on Saturday, his focus will be on helping Mumbai Indians open their account against Rajasthan Royals, who beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 61 runs in their IPL 2022 opening match.

Mumbai Indians will have the flamboyance of returning middle-order Suryakumar Yadav as they look to bounce back.

Suryakumar, who has joined the team after his recovery at the NCA, will likely bat at number three and has the ability to win matches at any position. He will be eager to move quickly and justify the trust shown in him by the owners.

Mumbai’s middle order collapsed in the game against DC and one of Anmolpreet Singh, Tilak Verma and Tim David will have to make way for Suryakumar.

Veteran all-rounder Kieron Pollard, who has a knack for hitting big sixes, also lost cheaply against DC and will be eager to go against the Royals.

More than their batsmen, Mumbai’s bowlers will need to step up as they were unable to defend 177, and given Rajasthan’s power-packed line-up, they will need to hit the right length.

The team will have confidence in pacer Jasprit Bumrah but they also need the support of others like Basil Thampi and Daniel Sams.
