IPL explainer: Why and why not on auction day

There were 20 players who received more than $1 million ( 7.53 crores as per Saturday’s exchange rates).

PTI tries to answer some common questions about IPL bids that fans have and why some crazy bidding happened while some remained unsold.

Q. Why did Ishan go to Kishan? 15.25 crores?

A: Current player of India and also wicketkeeper. Can win matches single-handedly and at 24 years old is his age. Part of MI’s batting corps. With 48 crores available, they could only go for a big India player. Match at Wankhede and with short boundaries, Kishan The man is watching.

Q. Why CSK paid 14 crores for Deepak Chahar?

A: CSK had to go the distance for one of these Deepak Chahri and Shardul Thakur, both blessed with multiple skill-sets. Chahar with his immaculate Powerplay wicket-taking ability and being part of CSK’s set template of experienced players was a no-brainer. Once they had taken Chahar, they couldn’t possibly go for Shardul. However, CSK still looks short on the express pace department but MS Dhoni will manage it.

Q: Why did Nicholas Pooran and Jonny Bairstow get big deals and Matthew Wade go unsold?

A: Most of the 10 teams needed a wicketkeeper. Pooran had a terrific last IPL but is still regarded as one of the biggest T20 hitters as well as one of the safest gloves and at times a prolific outfielder. SRH and Punjab Kings also had a lot in common with that kind of purse, which certainly boosted their bid.

As for Matthew Wade who played a blindfold in the T20 World Cup semi-final against Pakistan, he is not the best player of spin bowling on dull surfaces, and hence, Bairstow, who has shown his IPL wares, got a deal.

Q. Why with so many foreign fast bowlers? big fat deal,

A: Most teams sharpened their batting during retention, and therefore, always had to rely on auctions for fast bowlers. So a Lockie Ferguson and famous krishna Received more than Trent Boult at auction.

It also had a lot to do with Boult coming to the marquee set early and fast bowlers like Lockie, Josh Hazlewood coming later in the set. Kagiso Rabada also went for over a million dollars as he would have in first place.

Avesh Khan And Harshal Patel was rewarded for his brilliant performance last year and is playing domestic cricket regularly. Karthik Tyagi, Shivam Mavi all earned their streaks for raw pace yet despite not being even remotely in India’s contention.

Q: Why did KKR spend 12.25 crores on Shreyas Iyer?

A: KKR were looking at two things: a solid top-order, preferably No. 3 or 4 batsman and also a proven captaincy material. with top Indian batsman was not available, Iyer would have paid the cost of a bomb and he actually did.

Q: Which team was most influential in the choice of players?

A: Delhi Capitals did a good job of getting David Warner in at least, despite losing a lot of their core players 7 crores. The opening combination of Warner-Prithvi Shaw seems to be the most disastrous. It was also a deal to buy Mitchell Marsh for less than 7 crores and Sarfaraz Khan at the base price. 20 lakhs and to Kuldeep Yadav 2 crores.

Q. Which franchise looked the least impactful with their purchase?

A: While Lucknow Supergiants were really impressive in their first season (though they came first as Pune), the likes of Gujarat Lions defied the argument. They haven’t picked a wicketkeeper yet and even KS Bharat has been sold. It was surprising to give 9 crores to Rahul Tewatia, the wonders of a Sharjah match. He is not a consistent performer.

> Which franchise has good spin attack?

A: Rajasthan Royals with Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal have a very good spin attack for Indian conditions.

Question: What will happen to Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma?

A: Pujara and Rahane are ranked 103 and 104 respectively, while Ishant is ranked 124. They will all come on Sundays but they are low priority as per the demand of the players of the franchise. Rahane could be picked up by CSK for his experience.

Q: What will happen to IPL players like Siddharth Kaul and Mandeep Singh?

A: On Sunday, a lot of players will go for low bidding as most franchises have exhausted their wallets to buy first team players. Teams like KKR need to buy at least nine more players (for a team of minimum 18) and have only Rs 12 crore to spend. So these guys won’t attract big bids.
