IPS officer Rashmi Shukla appeared before Bhima Koregaon Commission

IPS officer Rashmi Shukla appeared before the Bhima Koregaon Commission in Mumbai on Thursday.

Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh was also summoned but did not appear before the commission, which is headed by retired Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court JN Patel, and includes former Maharashtra chief secretary Sumit Malik.

Ms Shukla, however, did not appear before the commission. He sought time to file the affidavit. He said that he has not yet received some documents regarding the incident from the Pune Police.

The commission is a judicial inquiry that was appointed after violence in February 2018 when Dalits were attacked, when the British won with the help of Dalits and defeated the Peshwas.

The commission issued summons to both the IPS officers on October 22, 2021, as Mr. Singh was Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) in 2018 and Ms. Shukla was the Commissioner of Pune Police.

The commission has so far received around 500 affidavits from victims, Dalit organisations, NGOs, right-wing groups, government and police officials in Pune, Mumbai and Thane.

Several human rights activists, writers and advocates are accused in this case and have been imprisoned.
