IPS Sanjay Arora takes over as Delhi Police Commissioner

Senior IPS officer Sanjay Arora took charge as the Delhi Police Commissioner on Monday, officials were quoted as saying by news agency PTI. On reaching the Delhi Police Headquarters here, the 57-year-old officer was given a formal guard of honour by the police force. The officer is due for retirement in 2025.

He was appointed as the Delhi Police Commissioner by the Central Government after the retirement of 1984 batch IPS officer Rakesh Asthana, who is a Gujarat cadre IPS officer and has been in service for about 38 years.

This comes a day after the Union Home Ministry approved Arora’s inter-cadre deputation from Tamil Nadu cadre to Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre. Delhi Police works under the Ministry of Home Affairs and its officers are from the AGMUT cadre.

Earlier, IPS Sanjay Arora Served as the Superintendent of Police of the Tamil Nadu Police Special Task Force, where he was awarded the Chief Minister’s Gallantry Medal for bravery during the process of hunting down Forest Brigade Veerappan.

“The 57-year-old officer was instrumental in forming a special security group to provide security to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The group was formed during the rise of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which led the separatist group. War for a separate Tamil homeland in Sri Lanka for three decades,” officials told PTI.

In August last year, the newly appointed Delhi Police chief served as the Director General of the paramilitary Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). He also served the nation by serving with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Border Security Force (BSF).

Meanwhile, the outgoing Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana On Sunday he said that although he had retired, his desire to work for the force and the people remained intact, adding that he did not feel “headache even for a minute” while performing his duty.

“Though I have retired today, I believe that I can do a lot for Delhi Police, people and the country… I still have the desire to work. But then, whoever joins the force must Have to retire one day,” Asthana said in his farewell speech.
