On Wednesday midnight, around 50 police officers from two crime branch units and local police stations raided a business park on road number 16 of Kisannagar area in Wagle Estate following a tip-off received by Joint Commissioner of Police Datta. bitter gourd,
Karale said, “The accused posing as an IRS officer and targeted US citizens. He called them using burner phones or number spoofing phones, or Voice over Internet Protocol, telling them that they had evaded taxes and that action, including arrests, would take place soon. To avoid any such action, he asked the victims to make payments through digital gift cards.
Police said that most US citizens who were intimidated by the calls paid the scammers through gift card numbers.
A police officer said, “The case is very similar to the fake call center of 2016, but other aspects of the case are yet to be investigated.”
During the raid, they seized several hard disks, modems, mobile phones and other gadgets worth Rs 3.25 lakh, a police officer said.
A case has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for cheating, extortion and criminal conspiracy. The arrested people were produced in the court, from where they were sent to police custody till May 25.
Police said the accused callers would converse in a heavily American tone and say that until the person on the other end paid their unpaid taxes, police and tax officers would try their best to arrest them and keep them in jail. Will go home
The caller would then offer to mediate and persuade the taxpayers to look for another way for the amount of money.
