Is poor oral hygiene linked to heart disease?

Poor oral hygiene not only causes dental problems, it can also increase the risk of other health problems like heart disease. Lack of proper oral hygiene can facilitate the growth of acid-producing bacteria in the mouth and maximize the risk of oral and dental problems.

In a conversation with Livemint, Dr. Gajinder Kumar Goyal, Director, Cardiology, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Faridabad, said that the bacteria that cause gum disease can spread through the blood vessels throughout the body. Gradually, the bacteria can cause inflammation in the blood vessels and heart valves and destroy them.

This increases the risk of complications such as blood clots, stroke, endocarditis (inflammation of the inner lining of the heart) and heart attack.

Dental care tips for people with heart conditions

People with endocarditis or those at risk for the condition should take extra care of their oral hygiene. Endocarditis is a medical condition in which an infection (mostly bacterial) leads to inflammation in the inner lining of the heart. Such people may need antibiotics before any dental work.

Patients who undergo heart valve surgery are advised to seek the advice of their dentist to promote their oral hygiene. Excellent oral hygiene is an important prerequisite for surgery because unhealthy teeth are a major source of bacteria that can trigger endocarditis.

People who have had a heart attack (myocardial infarction) are advised to wait for at least six months before undergoing any major dental procedure. Simple procedures like dental cleaning can be followed.

People who have experienced a stroke should inform their dentist if they are taking anticoagulants (blood-thinning drugs). The drug may cause excessive bleeding during certain dental surgical procedures.

Some medicines for high blood pressure (hypertension) can also cause dry mouth or a change in the sense of taste.

People who are taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications are advised to consult with their dentist and cardiologist prior to any dental or oral procedure.
