ISL 2021-22: Bengaluru FC in bid to revamp Jamshedpur FC

Bengaluru FC will take on Jamshedpur FC and their brilliant forward Greg Stewart in the Indian Super League here on Monday in an attempt to get back on the winning track. Former champions Bengaluru are on a run without a six-game win, with ATK managing to pull off a draw in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Mohun Bagan.

The Blues showed character in the game and this should boost their confidence, but in Jamshedpur, they will have more than a formidable opponent to deal with. Bengaluru are ranked 10th in the 11-team table with five points from seven matches. Jamshedpur are third with 11 points from six matches. Tomorrow’s win will put them within one point of Mumbai City FC, although the league leaders will have a game in hand.

For Bengaluru, it will be about getting back the pace and climbing the ladder. “We had good mindset, good creativity and good offensive transition. There were many positive things, but what we need to improve is our defensive organization and that’s why ATKMB did a lot of kicks against us, Blues head coach Marco Pezzuoli said.

“You can see the morale in the team, we fought till the end in that game. Danish (Farooq) was on the scoresheet, which inspires him. We are in a process where we send young players on the pitch and I think that gives a lot of energy in the next match.”

The game will also see two teams with swords of opposite styles of play. Bengaluru under Pezzaiuoli have transitioned to possession-based football, while Owen Coyle’s Jamshedpur are a side that doesn’t keep the ball as much. Bengaluru are likely to hold the majority, while Jamshedpur sit back and attack quickly if the ball is won.

Prince Ibarra has been in good form for the Blues and it augurs well for their attack. But Jamshedpur have Stewart who scored a hat-trick on the second day to announce his arrival in the league. The Scottish forward scored four goals and four assists in six appearances for Jamshedpur this season. No other player has contributed more goals this season than him.

Jamshedpur’s attack is now one of the most dangerous attacks in the league this season. He scored four goals in the first half of his previous match to take his tally of goals for the season to 13. Only Mumbai City FC has scored more goals this season than him.

“It will be a tough game against Bengaluru. Of course, we think we can win. They are a very good side,” Jamshedpur head coach Owen Coyle said on the eve of the tie. On Stewart, he said: “Greg Stewart is an amazing player. So I took him to the football club. I told everyone about his qualities in the pre-season and when I am justified it is good.”
