ISL 2021-22: Rahul Bheke Nets winner as Mumbai City FC consolidate lead

Mumbai City FC rode on Rahul Bheke’s second-half goal to consolidate their lead at the top of the table to end Chennaiyin FC’s unbeaten run in a Hero Indian Super League game at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda on Wednesday. Bheke scored in the 86th minute, making the most of Vishal Kaith’s mistake as Ahmed Jahouh bottled up the goalkeeper after setting up Bheke with a free kick. Courtesy of the result, Mumbai now have 15 points from six matches. Meanwhile, Chennaiyin slipped to the fifth position with eight points from five matches.

Chennaiyin got off to a good start but in no time back to Mumbai doing what they do best, maintaining the ball and controlling the pace of the game.

Casio Gabriel looked as quick as ever, but the first opportunity fell to Igor Angulo when Vishal Kaith had an easy collection meal and Angulo was on hand to take a swipe, but the veteran striker struck outside the post and Mumbai. Got disappointed.

Angulo had another chance to take the Islanders 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when Ahmed Jahouh bowled an entertaining delivery for them but the 37-year-old Spaniard hit a wide.

Chennaiyin struggled to get the ball out of their half as the league leaders took hold.

In the second period, it was as high as Mumbai tried to break through the tenacious Chennaiyin defence.

In the 70th minute, Gabriel fired the first shot, but Vishal Kaith made a fine reactive save, which was again called into action for a double save.

Mumbai head coach Des Buckingham brought on Ygor Catato for Angulo in search of that elusive goal, but it came from an unexpected source in the 86th minute.

Bhake scored his first goal for the club, nodding at a Jahou free kick near Kaith, who hit hard but saw the ball past the net.

Ariel Borisyuk fired a rocket from about 40 yards in the 89th minute, but the ball went right over the bar as Chennaiyin lost their first game of the season.
