Bambolim: Manveer Singh ATK. hit twice as Mohun Bagan Clinical won 2-0 FC Goa to put himself in a commanding position in the race for the semi-finals of Indian Super League (ISL).
Manveer Singh (3rd, 46th) scored on either side of half-time to ensure the Mariners extended their unbeaten run to 11 games under Juan Ferrando, who switched allegiance in mid-season to his former teammate. Double performance on the side.
FC Goa’s chances of making the semi-finals were slim, but the smoke went up as they remained on 18 points out of 17.
The Mariners were on it with the word go, taking the lead in the third minute itself. Dylan Fox clears Prabir Das’s cross for a corner. Liston Colaco hits Manveer in a delightful flag kick to flick the ball home with his back behind the goal.
Dheeraj Moirangthem had little time to react as the gaurs were quickly stung.
With half progressing Goa started moving forward and asking a lot of questions to the ATKMB backline Sandesh Jhingan first time from the beginning.
Jorge Ortiz had a great opportunity to launch Goa’s attack as he tried to find his partner selflessly from a good angle, only to see Tiri put out a left boot and take the threat away.
Liston was brilliant once again, scored those dazzling runs and got on well with Joni Kouko and Manveer. Anwar Ali found the crossbar shortly after the cooling break, when his rasping effort from long distance was hit by the woodwork.
After the break, ATKMB doubled their advantage to pour cold water on Goa’s hard work and build-up play. A minute into the second half, Manveer scored himself and the team’s second goal of the night when Rodrigues jumped on a loose ball from Princeton Rebello to Lenny Rodrigues.
Manveer controls the ball, dribbles to Dheeraj and guides the ball inside the goal.
Almost four minutes later, Liston got his hat-trick at the end of the ball, but Manveer couldn’t beat Dheeraj who did well to get his body over the line. ATKMB could have scored more goals as Kouko and Manveer also turned down gilt-edge opportunities.
Colaco hit the bottom of the crossbar when he whipped a cross from the left edge. Dheeraj finally scrambled to remove the danger. ATKMB held on to the fort till the end to ensure all three points and maintain their lead in form.
