IT Dept surveys CPR, Oxfam in FCRA case probe

The Income Tax Department on Wednesday launched a survey campaign against Delhi-based think tank Center for Policy Research (CPR) and global NGO Oxfam India as well as a media foundation as part of its probe into alleged FCRA violations in funds received by them. Official sources said.

He said the taxman took surprising action against three more organizations in the non-governmental organization (NGO) and charitable organization domains.

He said the department visited the premises of these organizations around noon and inspected the accounts and financial transactions under investigation related to the alleged violation of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).

Sources said the office staff and chief directors and office bearers were also questioned.

Media persons were seen waiting outside the CPR office complex at Dharam Marg in Chanakyapuri.

PTI did not immediately receive any comments from Oxfam India, Center for Policy Research and Bengaluru-based Independent and Public Spirited Media Foundation (IPSMF) and a few others.

Sources said the department is looking at the balance sheets of these organizations along with the receipt of funds through FCRA.

As per the law, all NGOs receiving foreign funds are required to register under the FCRA. The government has canceled the FCRA registration of around 1,900 NGOs in the last five years for violating various provisions of the law. There were 22,762 FCRA-registered organizations as of the end of December 2021.
