‘To me, it feels great’: Amarinder Singh on Jallianwala Bagh renovation

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday termed the reconstruction of the Jallianwala Bagh memorial by the government as “very good”. Singh’s remarks came hours after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called it an “insult to martyrs”.

Amarinder commented, “I don’t know what has been removed. It looks great to me.”

earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi Twitter tagged a media report on social media outrage over the alleged alterations to the Jallianwala Bagh memorial complex, with many claiming it was “destroying history” in the name of change.

Gandhi’s attack came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday dedicated the renovated complex of the Jallianwala Bagh memorial to the nation.

During the program, Modi also digitally inaugurated the museum galleries at the memorial. The event also showcased several development initiatives taken by the government for upgradation of the campus.

Congress leader Jaiveer Shergill alleged that the BJP-led central government’s project is “giving a makeover to Jallianwala Marg but not to preserve the traces of atrocities committed by General Dyer during the British rule”.

As part of the opening ceremony, a wreath laying ceremony was also held and a two-minute silence was observed in the memory of those killed in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

A sound and light show was organized to depict the events of the day of the massacre.

On April 13, 1919, more than 1,000 people were killed and hundreds were injured when British soldiers opened fire on an unarmed crowd of thousands who had gathered at Jallianwala Bagh amid nationwide protests against the Rowlatt Act, which marked the wartime repressive measures were increased.

During this, amarinder Recently also told about the recovery of tiffin box bombs filled with more than 2 kg RDX. He said it was not focused on farmers’ protest.

“We don’t know the purpose behind this (tiffin box bomb recovered by police which was allegedly delivered through drone). It was not focused on farmers’ protest. But the frequency in which weapons are being distributed in the last 1.5 years. I have never seen it in my life,” the chief minister said.
