CNN affiliate SkyTG24 reported on Monday that Beretta’s body was found sitting on a chair in the living room.
Manfredi told CNN that Beretta’s cause of death is unknown, and the examiner has established that she died in late 2019 based on the level of decay in her body.
No relatives of Beretta have yet been revealed, Manfredi said, adding that police are investigating whether she had any surviving family members.
For now, Beretta’s body remains in the morgue, and a funeral date has yet to be determined, Manfredi said.
Como Mayor Mario Landricina has invited city residents to attend Beretta’s funeral. He told the Italian press on Tuesday that the local government would take care of funeral arrangements.
“I will try to be there and I invite the city to attend,” said Landricina, “it is a moment to be together, and even if this woman had no relatives, So we can become his relatives.”
He said Beretta was not on the list for assistance from local social services.
On Facebook, Italy’s Minister of Family and Equal Opportunities, Elena Bonetti, mourned Beretta’s solitary death.
“What happened to Marinella Beretta in Como, the forgotten loneliness, hurts our conscience,” she said. “Remembering his life is the duty of a community that wants to stay united.”
Bonetti said: “Caring for each other is about families, institutions, the experience of being our citizens. No one should be left alone.”
