Italy will make further proposals to host Euro 2028 or 2032

Italy will propose to European football’s governing body UEFA to host the 2028 or 2032 European Championship for the country, the head of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said on Wednesday. Italy had originally planned to bid to host the Euro 2028 or 2030 World Cup, but a smaller project is more lucrative and gives the country the chance to undertake some much-needed renovations to its stadiums.

“The decisive step for the 2028 Euro is in March and we will present our candidacy before the UEFA Executive Committee, which is also open for 2032,” FIGC President Gabriele Gravina told a news conference.

“We will evaluate one of two options. We will do it seriously, because there is a great desire to upgrade the infrastructure, for example in Florence, Cagliari, Bologna and Bari.”

Some Italian stadiums have not been updated since the 1990 World Cup, the last major soccer tournament hosted by Italy alone.

In Florence, Fiorentina’s President Rocco Comiso has repeatedly expressed his dismay in the media over politicians refusing to let him invest in building a new stadium or even investing in the reconstruction of the existing Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Several other countries have confirmed that they will also bid to host Euro 2028, including the Football Association of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, which announced a joint bid of the United Kingdom and Ireland for the tournament. .
