ITF Women’s Open: Ankita Raina, Rutuja Bhosale advance in Bengaluru

India’s Ankita Raina and top seed Brenda Fruhvirtova of Czech Republic stormed into the singles quarterfinals of the ITF Women’s Open here on Thursday.

No. 4 Seed Raina didn’t break a sweat with a 6-2 6-1 win over Thailand’s Lanlana Tararudi in her round-of-16 match. On the other hand, 15-year-old tennis sensation Fruvirtova battled to a hard-fought three-set 6-4 3-6 6-2 win against Thailand’s Paingtorn Plipuch.

“It was a good match because it was a straight sets win. I got opportunities and grabbed them at the right time. I played Lanlana in India in December last year and that too was a straight sets win but a very close match.

Raina said after the match, ‘The conditions were a bit different here but I settled down early in the match and stuck to my aggressive approach and that helped me.’

The ongoing USD 40k tournament is hosted by Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) and sponsored by KPB Family Trust.

Unseeded Rutuja Bhosale, who had shocked second seed Valentini Gramatikopoulou on Wednesday, made it to the quarter-finals with a 4-6 6-3 6-2 win over Latvia’s Diana Marcinkevica.

Later, the 26-year-old Bhosale also made it to the doubles semi-finals with partner Jacqueline Awad as the third seeded Indo-Swedish pair easily beat Saki Imamura and Chia-Yi Tsao 6-4 6-3 in the quarters. -Final.

However, it was a heartbreak for another countryman, Zeel Desai, who could not beat sixth seed Madeline Nugroho of Indonesia 7-5, 3-6, 5-7.

Britain’s eighth seed Eden Silva also advanced to the last-8 with a 6-2 6-0 win over Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi.
