ITR Filing: Key Points To Note Before Opting For TDS Return On Income Tax Portal

Tax Deduction at Source (TDS) focuses on collecting tax from the source of income. The due date for filing TDS return for the first quarter of FY23 is July 31, 2022. The Income Tax Department is encouraging taxpayers to file their Income Tax Return (ITR) at the earliest and not wait for the last minute rush. A taxpayer can claim his TDS amount by filing his ITR. Notably, the last date for filing ITR for assessment year 2022-23 (FY22) is also July 31.

TDS occurs when a person (deductor) who is liable to make payment of specified nature to another person (deductor)– shall deduct do at the source and send it to the account of the Central Government. The deductor from whom tax has been deducted at source shall be entitled to credit of the amount deducted on the basis of Form 26AS or TDS certificate issued by the deductor.

A taxpayer would need Form 16/16A which is a certificate of deduction of tax at source and issued on deduction of tax by the employer on behalf of the employees. Taxpayers can verify the details of amount deducted as TDS, TCS, and advance tax paid along with self-assessment tax under Form 26AS. There is also another form called 26QB which is for furnishing TDS on the property.

The due date for filing TDS for the April-June 2022 quarter has been fixed as July 31. Whereas the deadline for July to September quarter is October 31 and January 31 for the December 2022 quarter, and the deadline for filing TDS for the fourth quarter. The quarter of FY23 (period from March 31, 2022) has been scheduled for May 31.

Archit Gupta, Founder & CEO, Clear, an income tax service provider said, “TDS return is usually filed by deductors. Most employers who deduct TDS on salary file TDS return. Usually a person buying a property Time TDS is deducted and deposited and TDS is deducted from the payment made to the seller. TDS is deducted by the buyer while making payment to the seller. This TDS should be deposited within a period of 30 days from the end of that month Form 26QB should also be submitted at the time of payment in which the deduction has been made.”

Before uploading the TDS return on the Income Tax Portal, a taxpayer needs to ensure that a Tax Deduction Account Number (TAN) is there and the same is quoted in all the documents relating to TDS. Also, the taxpayer must have a valid DSC registered for e-filing.

Notably, NSDL has developed a software called e-TDS/TCS Return Preparation Utility (RPU) to facilitate the preparation of e-TDS/TCS returns. It is a freely downloadable VB-based utility. There are different utilities available to prepare each type of statement.

Also, ensure that your PAN account is linked to your Aadhaar Unique Code while your mobile phone and bank account details are updated and activated.

As per the clear report, here’s how to upload your TDS details on the Income Tax Portal.

Step 1: Visit http://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ and click on ‘Login Here’.

Step 2: Enter your login credentials and click on ‘Login’. Your User ID will be your TAN.

Step 3: After logging in, click on ‘Upload TDS’ option under TDS tab.

Step 4: You will be provided with a form where you have to select the correct details. After selecting the details, click on Validate.

Step 5: Returns can be validated in the following ways:

Validate using DSC or Digital Signature Certificate. TDS details can be uploaded using DSC. To upload using DSC, first upload TDS zip file and also attach digital signature file. Then, click on Upload.

Once the TDS details are uploaded, a success message will appear on the screen and a confirmation mail will be sent to your registered email id.

– Then validate using EVC or electronic verification code. After step 4, if you have not generated DSC, you will be able to verify TDS details using Electronic Verification Code (EVC). Upload the TDS ZIP file and click on ‘Click here for e-Verification’.

– The next screen will give you the option to use the already generated EVC or generate a new EVC. Select the relevant option, enter the EVC and click on ‘Submit’.
