Visits to people’s residences by officials can help dispel myths and concerns about vaccination and get the job done. What should not be deployed is a tactic of coercion. Anecdotal reports have emerged from some states of job-givers threatening people to their jaws by giving false warnings of boycotts from welfare schemes if they do not comply. We must ensure that only persuasion is used, not coercion. Forced compliance can raise suspicion, harden resistance and thus prove counterproductive.
