Jailed SP leader Azam Khan is now the ‘most wanted’ person among other opposition parties in UP

Samajwadi Party’s 10-time MLA and former Rampur MP Mohammad Azam Khan has got bail in about 88 cases registered against him. He has been in prison for more than two years now. But suddenly Azam Khan’s case is turning out to be a complicated matter for the Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav.

While the jailed leader met Akhilesh’s uncle and Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party Lohia (PSPL) chief Shivpal Yadav and Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnan, he refused to meet the SP MLA delegation, which had sought time.

Other opposition parties, including the Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party and even the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), are scrambling to express sympathy for Azam Khan when he has been booked in most of the cases registered against him. Bail granted. First, the AIMIM wrote him a letter, inviting him to join its fold. Then came the Congress, whose leader had recently taken the lead in Prayagraj. billboards Khan’s welcome Now the BSP has also raised the issue of the jailed MLA as party chief Mayawati attacked the BJP in a series of tweets and alleged that Azam Khan was being harassed.

PSPL spokesperson Parakhar Singh said, “Our leader Shivpal ji had gone to meet Azam Khan in jail but SP chief Akhilesh Yadav is so busy that it does not take him an hour and a half to go to Sitapur jail and meet him. Respect is supreme and PSPL stands firmly with Azam Khan in the fight against atrocities. Even Azam Khan’s son Abdullah Azam has not clearly stated whether he is in favor of Samajwadi Party or not. It is for Azam Khan to decide whether he wants to leave SP or not. But I want to make one thing clear that Shivpal ji and his entire party stands firmly with Azam Khan.

It is not just these political parties that have raised questions even after Azam Khan is in jail. Bail In most cases. Even the Supreme Court had pulled up the Uttar Pradesh government over the issue and asked why so many cases were registered against Khan and why a new case was registered as soon as he got bail in the second.

Azam Khan is in jail for more than two years. Earlier his son Abdullah Azam and wife Tazeen Fatma were also behind bars but they are currently out on bail. SP sources say that Azam Khan was keen to field a member of his family in the Rampur Lok Sabha by-election, while Akhilesh did not give his final consent to it.

Even though the jailed MLA has many proposals, the Samajwadi Party seems to have little time to be on his side. Akhilesh visited her only once in two years. The SP chief recently met party workers in Azamgarh, but neither he nor the party’s state unit chief Naresh Uttam Patel went to meet Azam Khan.

The Congress feels that the SP has abandoned one of its top leaders when it needed its party the most. UP Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi said, “After our immediate family, a political party is a family for a politician. When we go through tough times, we expect our family and the political party we fight for. Yes, he will stand with us. But in case of senior leaders like Azam Khan, it is very unfortunate that when he needed it the most, SP left him. Our leader despite being from other party is in jail with Azam Khan. Go and meet. Senior leaders who stood by Mulayam and Akhilesh Yadav during the rift with Shivpal Yadav are being ignored and how. If Azam Khan’s family feels that they need us, then from our top leadership to Even our local workers will stand by them. Senior leaders like Azam Khan are welcome to join the Congress. However, our top leadership will take a decision in this regard.”

A few days ago, the jailed leader’s close aide and media in-charge Fasahat Ali Khan ‘Shanu’ had also expressed concern about the MLA and even said that “Azam Khan was sent to death in Sitapur Jail by the Samajwadi Party”. had left.

Along with the Azam Khan controversy, another issue that has emerged before the Samajwadi Party is to create discontent among its Muslim vote base. The lack of proper stand and clear statements on issues related to atrocities and hate speeches against minorities has also created negative sentiment in the community against SP.

After shying away from hosting Iftar and losing the 2022 UP assembly elections, Akhilesh Not only has he attended many Iftar parties, but has also been vocal on issues related to minorities. The SP chief is well aware that even a slight change in the voting pattern of Muslims can have a negative impact on his party in the state.

The Samajwadi Party also says that it stands firmly with Azam Khan, a victim of BJP’s vendetta politics.

Speaking to News18, SP spokesperson Abdul Hafiz Gandhi said, “Azam Khan Sahab is a founding member of the Samajwadi Party. The party is doing everything to help them. All the socialists are standing firmly behind him. We have faith in the judiciary that justice will be done to him and he will be out of jail soon. Azam sahib is a victim of the vendetta politics of the ruling party BJP. Whenever he gets bail, a fresh case is registered against him to prevent his release. This politics of BJP’s vendetta must end.”
