Jaipur couple drives Toyota Fortuner on sand dunes of Ladakh, fined ₹50,000

A couple from Jaipur have been booked by the Leh Police for driving their car in a restricted area.

Leh Police posted two pictures on Facebook that show a Toyota Fortuner driving on sand dunes in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh.

“A tourist vehicle was found violating the SDM [sub-divisional magistrate] Nubra has a directive not to drive a car on the sand dunes in Hunder. The couple from Jaipur were booked as per the law and 50,000 were taken by them,” Leh Police said in a Facebook post.

The district police requested tourists in Leh not to drive cars on sand dunes as it damages the natural landscape and violates prohibitory orders.

The license plate of the SUV shows that it is a Delhi registered vehicle.

This is the second incident in less than two months in which tourists have been caught ruining picturesque Ladakh with their harsh decisions.

In April this year, a video showing an Audi SUV racing through Leh’s Pangong lake, with two tourists hanging out from the sunroof and screaming, was widely criticized by the public. A table with foldable chairs and bottles of liquor, water and chips packets is seen in the video.
