New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar Praised the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari on Monday VajpayeeHandling the diplomatic situation after the nuclear tests in 1998 and said that within two years India had connected all the major countries of the world.
Presiding over the third Atal Bihari Vajpayee Memorial Lecture, which was delivered here by former Singaporean diplomat Bilhari Kausikan, Jaishankar Vajpayee’s tenure as foreign minister and his role in strengthening India’s relations with the US and Russia were also appreciated.
The External Affairs Minister said that most of the fundamentals that are now talked about with China in terms of ways of mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest are attributed to Vajpayee.
Asserting that Vajpayee was never “impervious” to the challenges of terrorism, Jaishankar lauded his realism in using virtually all tools to try to build the bedrock of ties in the region, which would defeat terrorism. Will end very clearly.
talking about 1998 Pokhran Nuclear tests, the External Affairs Minister urged people to look not only at the tests but also at the diplomacy that followed.
“Within two years of trials, we had involved all the major countries in the world, really brought them around. When you had President (Bill) Clinton, PM (John) Howard, PM (Yoshiro) visit Mori, the visit of President (Jacques) Chirac. It was really diplomacy after the test, which I think anyone who is in the field of diplomacy should look at and try to draw lessons from,” he said.
“I was stationed in Japan at the time and it was a relationship that was particularly affected by the nuclear tests. But we were always drawn to the Prime Minister’s confidence that we would find a way to resolve it and indeed today when I “I marvel at the wisdom and maturity with which Prime Minister Vajpayee has led all of us to look at that particular challenge,” Jaishankar said.
India conducted five nuclear tests of an advanced weapon design in May 1998 at the Pokhran range in Rajasthan.
Jaishankar said Vajpayee also changed relations with the US in the post-Cold War environment. He said Vajpayee also provided continuity and stability in our relations with Russia.
Vajpayee served as Prime Minister thrice – first for a period of 13 days in 1996, then for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999, and again for a full term between 1999 and 2004.
The lecture was delivered by Kaushikan, former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore. Kausikan currently serves as the Chair of the Middle East Institute at the National University of Singapore.
