Jamia’s first woman VC Najma Akhtar selected for Padma Shri

, first female vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Has been selected for the Padma Shri award. Akhtar will receive the award from President Ram Nath Kovind on Republic Day in the literature and education category. Not only Jamia, but the first woman vice-chancellor of any Central University of Delhi. Akhtar was born in 1953.

He has over decades of experience as an educationist. Before joining Jamia, Akhtar was serving as the Vice-Chancellor of Kashmir University. Akhtar has also headed the Department of Educational Administration at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) for 15 years.

He is known for setting up the first state-level management institute in Allahabad and introducing an international education administrator course for senior executives at NIEPA. She has also held positions in IGNOU. At the National Open University, he worked on creating curriculum for teachers who teach in distance mode.

On being selected for the award, Akhtar said, ‘I will accept this award not only for myself but on behalf of my colleagues. Now that we have the award in our institute, it has increased our responsibilities and will motivate us to work harder.” She further added, “I appreciate all those who recognized me and my work and considered me suitable for the award. Especially our President who entrusted me as the first woman Vice Chancellor of the Central University. I believe I have met the expectations.”

She is working towards gender equality in higher education institutions. At the time of his joining, Akhtar had said in an interview with News18 Urdu that his aim was to ensure that women’s enrollment in his university was 50 percent. Female enrollment in colleges across India is generally lower than that of males. She also said that she aims to set up a medical college in Jamia.

Akhtar is a gold medalist from Aligarh Muslim University. She has a PhD in Education from Kurukshetra University and has been a Commonwealth Fellow for University Administration courses at the Universities of Warwick and Nottingham. He has also trained at International Institute of Educational Planning (IIEP), UNESCO, Paris.

Congratulating its VC, Jamia tweeted, “It is a matter of great pride for @jmiu_official that Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar has been selected for the #PadmaShri Award for his distinguished services in the field of literature and education.”

This year the President has approved the conferment of 128 Padma Awards including two couplets. The list includes four Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri awards. A total of 34 women are among the awardees and the list also includes 10 persons from foreigners, NRIs, PIOs, OCIs and 13 posthumous categories.
