Dahi Handi celebrations are to be organised with a lot of safety measures in hand to ensure the devotees’ security and that they don’t injure themselves.

The grand festival of Janmashtami, or Gokulashtami, and Dahi Handi is being celebrated with great pomp and fervour. The day is marked to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. Along with Janmashtami preparations, devotees also take part in Dahi Handi Utsav, which is usually observed the next day, which is on the Navami tithi of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada month. Dahi Handi celebrations commemorate the way Lord Krishna used to live by stealing makhan (curd) from people’s houses and eating it.

For this, devotees form human pyramids and break a ceremonial pot tied to a rope at a certain height. The pot is filled with milk, curd, fruits, sweets, and even money. A young boy climbs to the top and breaks it, resembling Lord Krishna’s childhood.

However, these Dahi Handi celebrations are to be organised with a lot of safety measures in hand to ensure the devotees’ security and that they don’t injure themselves. Given here are some important safety measures for Dahi Handi Utsav.

Safety Measures To Follow During Dahi Handi Utsav

  1. For the Govindas taking part in Dahi Handi, one should avoid consuming alcohol. Considering that they will need to be physically strong for the sport, drinking can hinder their chances and even leave them injured if they lose balance.
  2. Organisers must make preparations for first aid in case of any mishap or emergency situation. For example, the Govindas might suffer a cut or fall from the pyramid, suffering a sprain. Quick first-aid will help provide on-the-spot treatment.
  3. Dahi Handi organisers should also arrange for an ambulance in case of any serious accident during the sport. As it often becomes difficult to call an ambulance during the festivities, advance preparations might be of great help.
  4. Some basic safety measures must be put into place, like providing knee caps and helmets to the Govindas. Also, a thick mat can be spread on the ground right below the pyramid.
  5. For Dahi Handi celebrations, including those with young children, the height must be considered, and the pots should not be placed on higher levels.
  6. Govindas should be well-trained in a pyramid formation to minimise the chances of accidents and ensure overall safety. If necessary, they could also be provided with harnesses.
  7. Besides all of these, cases of eve-teasing, molestation, and even sexual assault have been reported multiple times during Dahi Handi celebrations. To ensure the safety of female participants, proper security should be provided. Any such case should be immediately reported to the authorities.
Ensuring that children use this protective gear can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and injuries during the lively Dahi Handi festivities.

Safety Tips for Kids in Dahi Handi

  1. Supervised ParticipationEnsure that children are always under the supervision of a responsible adult. Avoid letting them join the human pyramids or crowded areas where accidents are more likely.
  2. Wear Protective GearEncourage kids to wear helmets and other protective gear if they are near the Dahi Handi activities. This can help prevent injuries from accidental falls or collisions.
  3. Keep a Safe DistanceTeach children to maintain a safe distance from the Dahi Handi structures and the crowds. This minimizes the risk of being accidentally caught in the festivities.
  4. Avoid Overcrowded AreasMake sure kids stay away from overly crowded areas where the risk of being jostled or trampled is higher. Create a designated, safer spot for them to observe the celebrations.
  5. Hydrate and RestEnsure that kids stay hydrated and take regular breaks from the festivities. The excitement and physical activity can be exhausting, so it’s important they have time to rest and drink water.

Protective Gear for a safer Dahi Handi

  1. HelmetsEssential for protecting the head from accidental falls or collisions, especially when children are close to or involved in the formation of human pyramids.
  2. Knee and Elbow PadsThese can help prevent injuries from falls or scrapes, providing cushioning and support for the knees and elbows.
  3. Wrist GuardsUseful for protecting wrists from twists or impacts that can occur during the event, particularly if children are climbing or involved in physical activities.
  4. Safety VestsBright, reflective vests can increase visibility and help keep children easily identifiable in the crowd, reducing the risk of accidental bumping or trampling.
  5. Sturdy FootwearClosed-toe, non-slip shoes offer better grip and protection compared to sandals or flip-flops, helping to prevent slips and injuries on uneven or crowded surfaces.
