Tokyo:

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has been infected with COVID-19 and is recovering at his official residence, his office said on Sunday.

Fumio Kishida, who returned from a week-long vacation, was to resume work on Monday.

A cabinet spokesperson said he developed cough and fever on Saturday and on Sunday morning he underwent a PCR test, which confirmed the positive result in the afternoon.

Japan has endured a record resurgence in coronavirus infections, affecting businesses in the world’s third-largest economy, although deaths are relatively low and disruptions have been modest compared to some other advanced economies.
