Japan to pay companies to keep sensitive patents secret – report

Japan will compensate companies for keeping secret patent With potential military applications under the proposed law, the Nikkei reported on Sunday without citing sources.

The Nikkei report said the proposed economic security law under review would include patents that could help develop nuclear weapons, such as uranium enrichment and cutting-edge innovations such as quantum technology.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida promised last month that he would put the country’s economic security among his policy priorities.

The report said the Japanese government would compensate companies covered under the law for approximately 20 years of license income.

The report said an outline of the law would be released as early as next month, with cabinet approval for February 2022 and the expected application of the measures in fiscal 2023.
